Teaching ESL with Patience – English as a Second Language

Teaching ESL English as a second language – Have Patience !!

Teaching ESL English with Patience
What is one of the most important qualities of a good ESL English teacher ?
I think “patience” is one of ..or the most important qualities of a “good” ESL (English as a second language) teacher. We need to have the patience to wait for our students and give them time to think of the answers to questions or responses. They will be trying to process the english language into their own language and to translate and think of the correct response. This takes time at all levels and especially at ESL English basic levels. We also have to be conscious of how long to wait before helping them answer.

WE Need Patience to teach ESL English – English as a second language)
It’s definitely a balancing act and we have to know when to “jump in” and help them. If we wait to long the student will freeze mentally and lose confidence ..they will also become very frustrated. They key is to KNOW when to help and how long to wait for them to respond. A little tricky but definitely a necessary requirement for a good ESL English as a second language teacher. Patience .. how long do we wait ?

ESL Teaching – Having No patience –
I have taken Spanish classes so i know the feeling of trying to learn a new language. It’s difficult !! My Spanish teachers did not give me sufficient time to think of my responses so i was always telling them to “wait” .. this happened on a regular basis with each different teacher. Definitely Not a good quality in an ESL English as a second language ..or any other teacher.

I hope this explanation about being a good ESL Teacher helps. (English as a second language)

Teaching ESL Corrections With a Smile

When teaching ESL, (English as a second language), and especially when teaching ESL English Grammar, it is very important to correct students in a positive way. It is important to correct, you definitely need to correct, but you, as the teacher, must also be correct and be positive in the method you use.

Try never to use the “no” word or “your wrong”, there are other more positive ways to correct. You need to encourage your students to speak – that’s why they want to learn Englsih, so they can speak!! … but if you, as the teacher, are critical and you use “no, your wrong”, it sends the wrong message to them and they can lose confidence and retreat into a shell that will deny them the opportunity to learn. No student wants to be told “your wrong”, and the best teachers are ones that can correct in a positive manner, correct with a smile and a positive attitude, so that student takes it as “help” and not as criticism. Then they will retain the confidence they have and feel ok about you correcting them as a help, not a criticism.

Always be positive …and correct with a smile !! Never a frown or a look of frustration. Difficult at times I know .. but remember your a “teacher” not a boss. Be patient and smile.. and your students will respond accordingly
